Stepping into December, the sky has already gone dark before 6:00pm and the temperature had dropped. Many children and parents hurried home to prepare for dinner together. However, today (December 7, 2024), our School, St. James Lutheran Kindergarten set off from Hing Wah (I) Estate, with a group of 18 people, to a charity restaurant in Shau Kei Wan for parent-child volunteer service.
Today, the school brought children and parents to the restaurant to help distribute meals, personally handing them out to residents in need. Watching them busy in handing meals, smiling and greeting the elderly at the same time, was a truly invaluable experience for the children. Besides academic learning, real-life experiences are crucial for children which may foster their multifaceted abilities. Furthermore, parental involvement allows parents and children to experiences together, expanding their understanding of the world and enriching their learning journey.
Life Experiences—The Significance of Community Service
When parents and children go into the community and participate in community service, it not only strengthens family relationships but also cultivates children’s sense of social responsibility and enhances their social skills, having a profound impact on their development.
Before organizing this event, we collected feedback from parents and found that most rarely had the opportunity to participate in community service activities. However, we understand that participating in community service allows children to reach groups and experience situations they rarely encounter in their daily lives. By directly interacting with those in need, they understand the needs of different people in the society and learn compassion and responsibility. Although the students are young, through this experience and with their parents’ support, the seeds of their potential to contribute to society and their sense of responsibility begin to sprout in their hearts.
Through joint participation in community service activities, creating a unique experience together, communication and interaction among family members are enhanced, strengthening their emotional bonds. Furthermore, parents and children can share their feelings and thoughts, strengthening family cohesion and creating shared, cherished memories.
Experiential activities typically involve interaction and collaboration with diverse individuals, providing children with opportunities to develop social skills such as communication and teamwork. Parental guidance and role modeling during these activities help children better adapt to society and build positive interpersonal relationships. Children learn collaboration skills during these activities, including division of labor, coordination, and support. They learn how to function within a team and enhance the meaning of cooperation—essential skills for future work.
Parent-child participation in community service not only helps those in need but also serves as an educational tool. It guides children to maintain a positive attitude, helping them derive enjoyment and inspiration from the experience, providing a valuable learning platform for their holistic development. Through these activities, family members can learn and grow together, fostering a next generation with a sense of responsibility and empathy. I believe these experiences will inspire children and become a crucial foundation for facing future challenges.
